Subject: Re: The South African again...
- hello Hans, Its all for that essay I am writing on how graphic design/corporate
- media sometimes draws so much form the conceptual side of fine art that there
- appears to be no barrier between graphic design and fine art.
but there is a barrier. you see it at design indaba, i experience it when i talk
at design events. they are fundamentally different to art events. designers and
architects are more constructive, they are goal oriented in some way. artists
dont have to be. designers have some kind of responsibilities, artists dont.
artists are very close or even similar/same as scientists, but very different in
their approach to how designers work.. i know i cant generalize, but i know many
many designers, and i can clearly tell the difference. an interesting person in
between is marti guixe, a spanish designer, but for me he is an artist, but still
he is famous as designer, and also wants to be that.
for example...your background - what was your childhood like?...where and when
did you first start hacking...what were the factors that led you to move from
place to place working and/or studying? how did you land up in art/design? +
anything else about yourself that you think is really interesting.
http://WWW.HANSBERNHARD.COM/introduction.html
- What is your view on globalisation?
re-read the indaba-magazine interview, there is quite some answers about this
topic.
the main things to say: due to "globalization" due to digital networks, the world
became a smaller place.
- and where do you think the world is headed in the future?
we are looking [actually we are right in] at a highly political decade. the
global civil wars will get more intense. the military conflicts between the
police [USA] and resisting forces [some nations, some institutions, some
networks] will heat up, conflichts between europe and the USA will arise.
from an artistic and scientific point of view. my freedom to do research and talk
about it, to do experiments is alreday and will further be increased and limited
[see the repression during the [V]ote-auction action, for example].
- What is your main motivation for the things you do? (other than that lovely
- mineral we all call cash!) and what do you want from life and from your work?
there is no motivation in cash. i only need cash to live and to finance my
research- and art-ventures. otherwise, money is highly demotivating because it
distracts you from the real stuff, you loose focus and start fighting over money.
so i say, fuck it'!
my true motivations are freedom. the freedom to research what and how and when
and where i want. to publish where and what i want, to say what i want, where and
how i want it. that is my pure and true motivation.
- and lastly...do you know of any other three people that would have an honest
- opinion on you and your work and ways?
jodi@jodi.org carl@micromusic.net zai@etoy.com
but, please! touch them gently, they are superbusy artists, so if you want a
statment, just ask them for one sentence or so.. dont send them Q-catalogues,
they will be pissed and they wont answer.. just write them, -start- i write an
essay on the works of hans bernhard/hans_extrem [or ubermorgen or whatever] and i
would be glad to get one sentence about his work from you -stop-
- FIrstly, what inspiration and simularities, if any at, do you draw from
- Joseph Beuys, or see your work as having in common with his thinking and
- conception?
as a little boy, when i was 7 years old, my daddy always took me to the same
museum contemporary art in switzerland. and there was beuys "feuerstelle"
installation [the fireplace-installation]. a lot of wood, and carpet stuff and
paper and metal and drawings of animals. totally "anti-aesthetic", so i just
stood there wordless.. wondering what the fuck i was looking at.. also the mario
merz neon-stuff with the fibunacci rows were totally strange to me, because i
couldnt find the math-algorithm in the numbers.. hahaha... for me, the global
corporations are the new GESAMTKUNSTWERK of our decades 1980-2010, monsters of
the universe, fantastic research-objects.. highly dangerous but
super-attractive.. thats the reason i started the etoy.CORPORATION with 6 other
maniacs, to explore the digital and corporate universe on lsd.
otherwise, if you are german speaking, you have to be extremely carefull about
JOSEPH beuys.. in germany he has A massiv followship, its like the fucking
scientologists... but even worse! they can not live or think without fucking
beuys. so... my opinion on beuys is:
"i, hans bernhard, am a member of the first fully virtual, digital internet
beuys-group, blackblox.com" [http://www.whoisreport.com/blackblox.com]
- I read in your design indaba interview that you have done and still do
- commercial work for company's like Nokia and Sony. Can you tell me about what it
- was exactly that you did for them and how it turned out conceptually?
it is fucked. you waste time. thats one point of view the other is, you make
money and you are like an adventurer in the new monumental wildernesses of
corporate organisations and communications. this is fantastic, because it is wild
out there, wild wild western land, the corporations are totally manic and mad,
like in the early days. now we have the opportunity to study them. i dont say the
old and stupid hippy shit like, you have to go inside to change them.. no, i just
mean that you can check out lsd-institutions and military- secret-service like
organisations just like that. during the 1999 year i really started to look
closely at global corporations and researched them, they really are the
GESAMTKUNSTWERK they look like.
the most hardcore client was ALLIANZ AG, one of the leading insurance companies.
you sit in marketing-board meetings and suddenly your mind starts to travel and
your eyes see strange things and you pop back into their reality and talk about
"serious" stuff. madness, simple, dangerous, madness!
- Where (and by who) can I find some of the better or more critical criticisms
- of you and the work you have done?
you can read "leaving reality behind" by regula bochsler and adam wishart. a
thriller about etoy, eToys and the internet. but that is more of a biography
somehow. http://www.amazon.co.uk , U.S. version coming out soon...
you can read a lot about our projects in the respective press areas.
http://www.vote-auction.net http://www.naziline.com ...
it is somehow hard to read a lot about ubermorgen or myself. there are 6-7 pretty
good critical articles on telepolis, the leading net.art magazine online, but
they are in german!
because of my radical way, i slide through the middle mostly and people from the
art world dont want to accept my work within their categories of fine art. other
disciplines like science or business also dont want to accept my work. the
critical criticisms will come, but they are way delayed always... like with
etoy.. the first serious book on etoy came out 1999 in italy. so it took em 5
years to get what we were doing... although they awarded us with the most
important price for new media, the golden nica from the ars electronica in 1996,
they also didnt really know why and what for, the just were intuitively right to
choose us, etoy! http://www.prixars.at , there you can find the jury statement.
and under the search term etoy, you will find some critical stuff, there are
articles in domus and other art, design and architecture magazines.. but mostly
print.
just run a google search on brainhard, hans bernhard, etoy.hans etoy,
etoy.brainhard, lizvlx, ubermorgen, naziline, „AZI~LINE, voteauction,
vote-auction, etc.. to get online material...
- Lastly, can you give me a background of yourself as in where you were born,
- grew up and studied, and other stuff like that?...
BORN 1973 YALE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, NEW HAVEN CONNECTICUT USA
STUDIED VISUAL MEDIA ART AT THE UNIV. OF APPLIED ARTS IN VIENNA, PROF PETER
WEIBEL, MFA DEGREE 1999
CURRENTLY WORKING ON PHD "MEDIA HACKING"
- again, thankyou very much!
a pleasure. and make sure! you send me a digital copy of your essay for my
archive. and if you publish it, please send me urls or publishing infos so i can
put it in my archiv and use it as publications-reference.
and last but not least. please send me your full name, your address, your email
address and your web-site + your university, your department and professor, so i
have some infos on you too..
